The 5th Rhode Island BioBlitz took place in West Greenwich on the beautiful 2,300-acre W. Alton Jones Campus of the University of Rhode Island. Approximately 109 scientists, naturalists, and volunteers participated.
BioBlitz 2004 began at 3:00 PM on Friday, June 18 and continued for 24 hours. Friday night, the Environmental Education Center hosted a barbecue for scientists and volunteers, and as a special treat, there was an evening lecture on the history of the Alton Jones Campus. Members of the public attended on Saturday for guided walks, observing the professionals, and attending the final countdown.
By the end of the 24-hour event, volunteers had identified 1,005 species, the first RI BioBlitz to crack the 1,000 species mark! This BioBlitz STILL, in 2025, holds the records for most Odonata, butterflies, amphibians (tied with 2016), and mammals (tied with 2012). Highlights also included 380 vascular plants, a record just barely topped with 384 in 2006 and still the third highest ever as of 2025. At approximately 2,300 acres, it is still the largest RI BioBlitz site attempted, and that hurts the participants/acre (0.47) and species/acre (0.4). The species/participant is 9.2.
