There’s an exciting project going on to document the status of Rhode Island’s many, important pollinators. Dr. Katie Burns is Rhode Island’s Pollinator Biologist, working for Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, Division of Fish & Wildlife. She came to Rhode Island in 2021 to organize surveys of the major groups of pollinating insects in the state: bees, moths, flies, and more. In recent decline globally, the status in Rhode Island of these economically and ecologically important organisms is unknown. Dr. Burns’ first effort is a survey of the bumblebees of Rhode Island.
