Mosquitoes of Rhode Island

With Zika virus spreading, mosquitoes are in the news. As an unwilling food source for females of certain species, people tend to have just one experience of mosquitoes. But there are dozens of different species in Rhode Island occupying diverse ecological niches. Learn about the diversity of mosquitoes, their life cycles and many ecological connections, and the programs that track them in Rhode Island. Dr. Howard Ginsberg is an entomologist with the U.S. Geological Survey Pawtuxent Wildlife Research Center, based at URI, and Dr. Al Gettman is coordinator of the Mosquito Abatement Program at the RI Department of Environmental Management.
